Seignosse Océan beaches are considered as the best spots with sandy bottom (beach break) in Europe and even in the world !

You will find in Seignosse 7 km of beautiful beaches of fine sand, a real surf paradise.
For twenty years takes place every year at least one stage of surf world championships. Quiksilver Pro France and Rip Curl Pro are the most famous. Surf au féminin - CP Testemale

Surfing consists of riding a wave not very far from the seafront standing on a surfboard in a place called « spot ». It has been practiced since the 15th century in Polynesia and it is only from the end of the 50’s that it was imported in Europe, and more precisely in Biarritz. Very quickly this sport developped and came at Seignosse. Bodyboard, longboard, kneeboard, bodysurf, skimboard, stand up paddle or tow-in surfing are different kinds of surfing. It is the same sport but the boards are different and the position of the surfer on the board is different as well (kneeling or lying for instance…).

Wind and swell of good quality are necessary for surfing. These conditions may vary according to the spots.

Surfing is free, however you have to :

  • Respect the beaches areas
  • Use an equipment in good condition and adapted to your skill level
  • Never go surfing if the weather is stormy
  • Don’t overrate your abilities and begin to learn on the spots where you touch bottom
  • Respect the rules of right of ways and of friendship in order to avoid collisions
  • Give assistance to persons in distress
  • Get informed about the local regulations (bylaws)

There are three main kinds of waves : hollow wave, weak wave and small wave.

Spot de surf de Seignosse vu du ciel - CP Stephan AmelinckThe waves that the surfers of Seignosse like best are the waves that arise in the north atlantic. The wind over the water surface is generating a wave and this wave propagation creates a swell. About two or three days later, this swell comes on our coasts and make surfers happy.

Moreover the power of the waves in Seignosse is greatly increased by the « gouf of Capbreton » (a submarine canyon of 3000 m offshore) which gives us waves of an uncommon quality !

The surf business developped at the same time of wave riding in France. Surfing is integrated to the local culture, its identity and its economy. The main surfwear factories (the famous surf factory outlets) are in Les Landes, in the industrial park of Soorts Hossegor.

Thanks to all these elements, Seignosse has a wide range of surf schools and surf camps of quality located in beautiful areas :
